Birth of Gratitude Blog

Posted on August 09, 2006 in thoughts.

Jean sent me an eCard with a sentence I had once written to her:

So many times each day, I am in a state of extreme gratitude. Oddly enough, most of the time it has nothing to do with circumstances of the day; sometimes I'll just be sitting there in silence and there'll be a surge of energy coupled with incredible gratefulness. Although my mind tends to attach that gratitude to something or another that's immediately relevant in my life, my hunch is that it's a natural spring that sprouts without a rhyme or a reason.

A while back, I had a thought of writing a note to gratitude every night before I sleep … to honor the deep connections that I cherish.

In our networked, information-heavy world, we are suffocated with lots of superficial connections – MySpace or LinkedIn, or it's an email from your co-worker's neighbor whom you met once or an interesting blogger that your sister has been reading for a year or an artist whose photos are up on Flickr. Yes, your addressbook has a thousand email addresses but really, how many of those people would wake up at 1AM to help you out?

And it's not just people. Our connection to ideas is also superficial. We will watch 'Inconvenient Truth' and talk about sustainability but we'll still use plastic, not change the light bulbs in our house, and secretly admire SUV's. We will donate to a homeless shelter or sponsor a well in a developing country, but we will ignore a homeless man on the street and indulge in long showers everyday. We will read spiritual books and quote scriptures, but we can't get along with those closest to us and we never practice being still.

Such paradoxes are a reality, for all of us, not because we don't believe in things but because we're confused about what to believe in. Hedging, weighing in the opportunity cost, cashing in for the quick fix, we sink in the quicksand of information, mis-information, dis-information.

And that's where gratitude comes in for me. Gratitude creates that stillness that allows truth to arise, clears out the lens through which I look at the world, and gives me that extra umph needed to make my life my message.

All to say, that from this point, I hope to write entries of gratitude on this blog.

“From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: that we are here for the sake of each other - above all for those upon whose smile and well-being our own happiness depends, and also for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy. Many times a day I realize how much my own outer and inner life is built upon the labors of my fellow men, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received.”

Dear Sir,

On this Teacher's Day, wish you peace, prosperity and happiness, and I hope more and more students get inspired by you to become succesful and contributive in the world (unlike me ;-) )

Nice to recall all those classes, your immaculate hand-written notes, your patience and calmness in handling our hopeless lot during the times when we were a little less than the best possible students we could be, your cool sense of humor, and best of all your neverending encouragement and support and unimistakably genuine concern that we do well.

Thank You,
Sanjay

Subject: namma HOD...

My wife and I went to visit him. Wanted to call others (in Bangalore) also but I wanted to ask somethings in particular so preferred to go alone.

Strangely, I found a really greater appreciation of him than when I'd ever known him earlier. Vijetha too felt that he's quite an extraordinarily wonderful gentleman, our HOD.

Compared to an educationalist-line's salary scale, its unbelievable the amount of more money he could've made by going to the industry! Happened to get a very brief idea of the "meta-data" behind running a college. I'd merely been familiar with the students-managing point of view but the countless other aspects aren't easy either, to say the least. There are so many challenges - and his patience, perseverance, honesty, creativity and tact in dealing with them is quite extraordinary. Afaik most of us are quite succesful in our careers. I realise now (well, better late than never!) that he is one key person who's made an important contribution to us to be where we are now, because he never gave up in running the show.

It was mailing/talking to him again. Definitely not for his sake... he already has plenty of alumni students saying hi to him every now and then... but for my sake, I felt very happy :-)

Cheers,
Sanjay

PS: Btw I don't see any need for me to tell him any of this and make a sentimental mess of the whole thing :-) Whatever I wrote in my previous email (below) was enough. This was just a small note I felt like sharing only amongst ourselves.

Dear Nipun,

Truly said.. The more Iam grateful, the more is given to me.. The more Iam in a status of fullness, completeness and abundnace, the cosmos gives me more and more...

One has to experience the gratitude with every breath he/she takes..Iam also on the way to making this a reality in my life..

Your stories and especially your trip to india with gauri was truly inspiring.. I really wish I could be part of something like that..

with best regards to both of you and the team at charity focus..

Dear Nipun,

Your entry and the responses - in my mental chaos due to recent separation - seem foreign to me; so pardon me if my question seems to be on a different tangent.

As much as I try to be greatful about things that are right (among all that seems wrong), I find it hard to truly 'believe' it. It remains merely an intellectual appreciation; it just does not go deep. There is too much chaos in the way, to allow for those thoughts to really sink in. So, it seems that you need some sort of stillness for even the gratitude to arise. To me, it appears to be the other way around - perhaps knowing the truth will put things in better perspective which will quieten the mind and in that stillness I will see everyhting that is right and be greatful for whatever is.

Please throw some light. I seem to be chasing the peace and gratitude that seem to have recently become foreign to me, while I know (intellectually) that it is my true nature as a human being.

waiting,
Shveta.

I was humbled by your writing. In the past few weeks I was consumed by resentment and jealousy, so much that I had to resort to extreme measures to contain it. Having read your entry, this seems like a plausible solution. Instead of letting it engulf me, I should ponder about all things that I have and be grateful for them...thanks!
