Just Do It

Posted on February 02, 2005 in pilgrim-singapore.

At this restaurant, you don't get billed for your food. Pay what you like, their slogan reads. It sound unbelievable but there's a fully volunteer-run, high-end restaurant -- Annalakshmi -- where they trust that everyone will pay their fair share. And the food was awesome too!

A very kind lady, who has been there since Annalakshmi opened in Singapore 20 years ago, spoke with us for a bit. I asked why she does this, and she replied, "I don't know. It just fills my heart. I don't really have any expectations. I just do it."

Here are some more tidbits:

- Annalakshmi also has similar restaurants in Southern India. In a couple of these restaurants, they do have a minimum charge (and it is really minimum).
- You can purchase any of the decorations in the restaurant, and the proceeds go to charity?
- All the food is prepared at the homes of volunteers. It is assembled and finishing touches are added in the restaurant.

Uh, that might be true of the Annalakshmi in Coimbature, but not the one in Chennai. The pay-what-you-want scheme is good for only one day - Founder's Day. When we were there on Feb. 26, fruit drinks were Rs. 100, and the thali was Rs. 350. The most expensive meal we had, by far, in all of South India. Very beautiful restaurant, though, with incredible service by an all-volunteer wait staff.

It would be nice of Singapore's Annalakshmi could match the standards of the other branches outside Singapore.

The food in Annalakshmi Singapore, is prepared absolutely half heartedly. The service staff (not all) volunteers are extremely hoity toity and make the experience miserable.
