Walk For Hope

Posted on September 11, 2004 in events.

Every year, our good friend, Sukh Chugh, puts on an amazing Walk For Hope on 9/11. We took our compassion caravan to Huntington Beach this year and lit up the beach with smiles.

So Sukh we played a game on the drive home where we each told one line of a story. At the start of each person's turn they had to recap the entire story up to their turn and then add their line before passing it on to the next person... this is how the story went...

Sukh woke up one morning and decided to shave off his beard and after shaving his beard he brushed his teeth. On his way out the door he grabbed a stack of smile cards and headed to Beverly Hills where he ran into Charlie Sheen. The two of them spotted a Laker Girl and Sukh introduced himself as Charlie Sheen much to Charlie's displeasure. The Laker Girl responded by saying that she didn't have time and was going to the Walk for Hope to which Charlie responded that he had organized the Walk for Hope. They decided to go off together leaving Sukh behind to wander the streets. In wandering Sukh came upon a monkey dancing the Kahuna and decided he could show the monkey how to get down and started doing the Bhangra. While the music was playing up walked a clown with smiley faces and it started doing the hula. All of a sudden Sukh turned to the monkey and asked, "Are you a compassionate monkey?" Immediately after his question Sukh went into deep samadhi and had a vision. His vision was of Charlie Sheen running the Walk for Hope sporting a Sukh-esq beard and doing so arm in arm with the Laker Girls. Sukh woke up screaming, sweating, and felt his beard. It was all a dream.

He jumps into another dimension, where the Laker Girl, Sukh, the monkey, Charlie, and the clown are all doing dandia raas. In parallel, in yet another dimension, Mr. Spock realizes that the Earth is going to end in 1 minute unless massive acts of kindness are done everywhere. So he quickly beams up all the smiley faces (from the clown) and the smile cards. Spock realizes that they need to all be there in person so the crew of the Enterprise beams down to the garba.

Sukh realizing drastic times call for drastic measures decides to shave off his beard. Spock declares that Sukh's beard contains the secret to saving Earth. Spock orders everyone to start looking through Sukh's fallen hairs for the secret. The monkey starts to screech and scream thinking he has found the secret, but alas it turns out to be just a hair from Viral's beard. Suddenly Sukh
decides that perhaps before the world ends they can do a quick Hindi song and the music comes on. Sukh dancing like Shah Rukh Khan does a
good rendition of Kal Ho Na Ho while the Laker Girl realizing her potential immediately appears in a white sari and dances under a waterfall. Like all good Hindi movies, the scene changes and Sukh and the Laker Girl are in Switzerland dancing to Dil Chata Hai. In Switzerland Sukh realizes that he has one hair on his chin that he missed and that might be the key.

He beams back to the garba and at the door is a monk/bouncer who thanks Sukh for saving the world by his selfless act of renunciation in shaving his beard. He prostrates himself before Sukh. While the monk is bowing the hair falls from Sukh's chin zig zags down, makes a left turn and implants itself in the monk's head. Taken as a sign, the monk decides to start a religion of the one-haired one. The monkey decides it will be the first disciple and shaves his head except for one hair. The monk requests Sukh for the name of the religion and after deep thought, Sukh decides on... Be The Cause.

The monkey decides that networking needs to be done and states that it knows a possible organization in the Middle East, Al Qaeda. Sukh, the monk, Charlie, the Laker Girls, and the clown decide to leave the monkey and they live happily
ever after.

I think that was how it ended, but it was quite an entertaining story and drive. Wanted to thank you for helping make our drive so interesting (and for saving the world).

Neerav,

What an amazing story!!! Wish I could have been there because my story would have went something like this:

Neerav was attending the inter-galactic parade one day in the southern hemisphere of planet Smilaxagon. This parade was unlike any that Neerav had attended in his earlier youth :) Not only were clowns, doves and the Laker Girls present but Mr and Mrs Universe themselves were in attendance to give away the highly sought-after annual prize. Knowing that the prize would only be a temporary sensation, Neerav decided to search for something more permanent... the Laker Girls. Besides, today was Wednesday, and Wednesdays were always about giving prizes away.

Doing what he does best, Neerav decided to bring some happiness to all the people he would meet. At times, he would open doors for others, and sometimes he would just smile in the hopes that others would smile back. Neerav was a good man.

Neerav decided to help with the parade. Not knowing what he was getting himself into, he offered to watch over the gigantic 3M pink ribbon so that others may partake in the celebration. Before Neerav arrived both You and Me were attuned steadfast to the protection of the pink ribbon. The pink ribbon, symbolizing a deeper commitment to ones own life, had a profound connection with You and Me. You was spending her daily life Providing Protection (propoor) to those in need. Me on the other hand was a partner to You in all things good. Me was also considering giving up his day job as a clown to grow his beard full-time. (He was still upset that Raj had shaved, leaving the burden of beard on others to carry).

Unknown to Neerav, Mr. and Mrs. Universe led the entire planet on an interfaith ceremony and all the inhabitants were focused on the celebrations. Neerav alone sat in front of the pink ribbon determined to protect the ribbon from the attacks of the evil Volunteer Attrition monster. As Neerav sat, the celebrations continued. The Laker Girls danced with the clowns who all flew on the backs of gigantic doves. It was a sight to see.

Mrs. Universe grew tired of the celebrations and wanted to retire back to their homes. Mr. Universe however had to give away the annual prize before the evening drew a close. Nasha, also known as the bliss of the east, was asked to find one worthy inhabitant for the gift. She searched far and wide and only found clowns with jaded frowns. She finally came across Neerav and was astounded by his dedication. She offered the gift to Neerav who at this point was faint with hunger and exhaustion. As Neerav opened the gift his eyes grew big and wide. A bright light shined from inside of the gift box. Neerav peered into the gift box and retrieved his new gift... a smile card: experiments in anonymous kindness.
